Description
Tulip Tree Flower by Sandra Clark
The Tulip tree has the honor of being the State tree for Indiana, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Tennesse. I have had the honor of calling two of these states home.
The tulip tree is often referred to as the yellow poplar, tulip magnolia, tulip poplar, white poplar, and whitewood. It is easy to recognize in the spring-summer and fall be the tulip shape of its leave. In the spring, you can find the pale yellow and orange blooms around the tree, but it is hard to see the flowers. The blooms often appear on the very top for the tree.
The wood is suitable because it can float.
Stands of older tulip trees remain in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. Some of these trees are giants 150 feet high and 12feett in diameter.
I am fortunate to have a couple of tulip trees in my back yard.
